How to love others by practicing better self-care

14 February 2021

If there is anything the last year has taught us, it is the importance of our health. It is usually easier to turn your attention to the needs of others while ignoring yours. With February being all about love, and as cliché as it may sound, I want to take this opportunity to remind you about self-care. The idea behind self-care is recharging our batteries so we can be there for ourselves and others.

Self-care has real health benefits, and you can do it for next to nothing or free. The important part is carving time out in your day to focus on YOU.

Here are a few ideas, big and small, you can start right away:

- Take a few minutes in your day to self-meditate or pray.

- Feed your mind daily with new knowledge. Whether it is reading or re-reading your favorite book, learning more about a hobby you have always wanted to try, trying something new, watching documentaries. Whatever it is, give yourself space to learn.

- I never liked the term social distancing because it implies that we should not be social. I prefer to call it physical distancing, you should continue to surround yourself with people that make you happy and challenge you to be a better person. Even though we cannot meet in person, be sure to connect with friends online or even plan virtual movie and game nights together.

- Last, but not least, move your body! Even if it is just a 5 or 10 minute walk around your house or in the corridor.

Sincerely,
Marwa Kaabour
